AI Agents, Digital Identity and the Future of Trust

AI agents acting on behalf of consumers and businesses will become one of the defining digital trust challenges of the next few years. The core issue is straightforward. If an agent cannot be bound back to a verified human or organisation, there is no trust model. Full stop. Yet human or organisational binding is only the starting point. The more difficult question is what that agent is actually allowed to do, on which channel, on which device, with what level of authority, and whether that action should happen at that exact moment. That moves the market beyond static identity checks and into continuous trust, contextual authorisation and intent assessment. Regulatory, Standards, and Market Context


The market is moving quickly toward formal agent trust and security frameworks. In February 2026, NIST announced its AI Agent Standards Initiative to help ensure AI agents can act securely on behalf of users and interoperate across the digital ecosystem. At the same time, NIST’s NCCoE has started work on software and AI agent identity and authorization, specifically focused on practical guidelines for identifying, managing and authorizing actions taken by software and AI agents. On the security side, OWASP has published agentic AI threats and mitigations, an AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet, and dedicated work on the most critical risks in agentic applications and agentic skills. The market is also showing that traditional controls will not be enough.
